Copper remains one of the most lucrative and crucial industrial commodities driving the global transition toward electric mobility, renewable power grids, and smart manufacturing. However, when scrap generators sell secondary copper to local informal dealers, they frequently lose up to 15% to 25% of true value due to arbitrary batch downgrading and rigged mechanical scales.
Understanding the ISRI Classification Standard
In the formal international recycling marketplace, copper is not traded as generic scrap. It is graded according to strict specifications established by the Institute of Scrap Recycling Industries (ISRI):
- ISRI Berry / Candy (No. 1 Bare Bright Copper): Clean, untinned, uncoated, unalloyed copper wire, not smaller than 16 B&S wire gauge. Free of burnt brittle wire. Commands 98% to 100% of the benchmark commodity spot rate.
- ISRI Birch / Cliff (No. 2 Copper Scrap): Clean miscellaneous unalloyed copper scrap having a nominal 94-96% copper content (minimum 94%). Can include light tinning, solder joints, or thin gauge enamelled motor windings.
- ISRI Dream / Druid (Light Copper / Sheet): Copper gutters, downspouts, kettles, boilers and light gauge sheet metal with 88-92% recovery.
